a merchant can save a copy of my Credit Card?
Just wanted to ask if a wholesaler / travel agent is legally authorized to copy my driver's license and credit card and maintain? I recently made a large transacation about a thousand dollars with a travel agent. After to process the payment, the agent took a copy of my driver's license and Credit Cards with him. I was wondering if its legal authority to do so? I worried that they can publish a transaction maybe a year later on my card, and I may be too busy to notice. Is it possible? I guess …. a concern that had is .. what if you try to sneak in an operation that next year at $ 15.93 in October … and then maybe $ 7.93 in December … I know that all invoices received and can check it … but as "innocent" transactions may get completely unnoticed and may end up paying for them. Is this possible?
The reason they do this is to protect a chargeback. A chargeback is a disputed charge that a seller is often forced to return the cardholder if they have the necessary documentation to prove that the cardholder actually made and understood the terms of purchase.
